Collagen is the most prolific protein in our bodies. There are more than 25 types of collagens that naturally occur in the body.
Collagen makes up 90% of the total amount of the body’s protein balance. It connects and supports skin, bone, tendons, muscles, and cartilage. It also supports the internal organs and is even present in teeth.
As we age, the production of collagen begins to slow down and cell structures start losing their strength. As result, skin starts to become fragile, less elastic and wrinkles start to form, hair starts losing its colour, joints lose their flexibility and bone quality begins deteriorating. Collagen can also be damaged by too much exposure to the sun.
Research shows our collagen levels can diminish at a rate of approximately 1.5% per annum from the age of 25 years onwards.
